Behemoth
Have you ever heard a scholar teach that dinosaurs are mentioned in the Bible? Probably not. But anyone that has seen the remains of these fantastic creatures knows the Bible would be incomplete, if these creatures were not mentioned. The Bible is complete, and we will document the mention of dinosaurs in God’s Word.
Some might ask, “Why is it important for us to be knowledgeable about dinosaurs today?” My friends, there is nothing new under the sun. Everything in God’s Plan is designed as a type or an example whereby we may better understand our Father’s Word.
Man of this world often thinks he knows a great deal. Job was one that thought he knew a great deal. However, as we all should learn, Job found out his knowledge compared to God’s knowledge and wisdom is infinitely smaller.
Before we turn to Job, I want to begin with Genesis to establish that when God created man in the flesh there were fallen angels on earth that took wives. The progeny of these couples were called Nephilim in the Hebrew tongue. This was Satan’s attempt to pollute woman from whom Christ would later come.
GENESIS 6:2-3 That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose. 3 And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years.
This is very important. Man also became flesh. Let’s pick it up with verse six.
GENESIS 6:6 And it repented the LORD that He had made man on the earth, and it grieved Him at His heart.
The Lord was sorry He created man on earth and in verse seven He said He would destroy those that mixed with the fallen angels. God loved Job a great deal. In the Hebrew tongue, Job means persecuted. How many of you ever feel persecuted?
I believe God used Job to teach us a lesson. God was instructing us through Job that Satan has no power over you, if you have Jesus Christ. When you are armed with the power of Christ, Satan will run from you. He is afraid of you when in the name of Christ you order things out of your life.
I think Job was symbolic of the elect. He thought Satan couldn’t break him. You, the elect, must be on guard against Satan. If you aren’t, he will deceive you. Use the power you possess through Christ to order Satan out of your life.
The first thirty-seven chapters of Job are about three of Job’s friends who thought they knew the cause of every chastisement placed on Job. They were telling Job the Lord was placing afflictions on him. Job said he believed in God and did nothing against Him. His friends told him that he must not be doing something right because he had those boils and his family was gone.
Before we turn to Job 38 it is important for you to understand 2 Peter 3. There are three world ages. We are now in the second world age. The first thirty-seven Chapters of Job are about the knowledge and wisdom of man, or the lack thereof. God says nothing to Job until the thirty-eighth chapter.
JOB 38:1-2 Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said, 2 "Who is this that darkeneth counsel by words without knowledge?
Why are you listening to these people Job? They have a lot to say, but they have no knowledge.
JOB 38:3-5 Gird up now thy loins like a man; for I will demand of thee, and answer thou me. 4 Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding. 5 Who hath laid the measures thereof, if thou knowest? or who hath stretched the line upon it?
If you ever have an ego problem and think you are really something , put yourself in Job’s shoes at this point.
Where were you when God laid the foundations of the earth? The very thought should humble anyone. You must rightly divide the Bible to understand God’s Word.
God is talking about the first world age when the earth was created. This earth is millions of years old. It is this earth age that is but six thousand years old.
JOB 38:6-7 Whereupon are the foundations thereof fastened? or who laid the corner stone thereof; 7 When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?
Who are these sons of God in the first world age? Were they sad? No, the Bible says they were singing and shouting for joy. This was before Satan’s rebellion. The children of God, might I say before they were in the flesh, were happy souls.
Paul taught us that we have a flesh body and a spiritual body. There is no mystery in that. We are going to turn to Chapter 40 where God continues questioning Job and begins to use types.
The Father is challenging anyone, including Job, to argue with Him or His wisdom. God begins to use the animal kingdom to make His point.
JOB 40:1-2 Moreover the LORD answered Job, and said, 2 "Shall he that contendeth with the Almighty instruct him? he that reproveth God, let him answer it."
Be careful you don’t attempt to instruct God, even in your prayers. It makes Him angry.
JOB 40:3-5 Then Job answered the LORD, and said, 4 "Behold, I am vile; what shall I answer thee? I will lay mine hand upon my mouth. 5 Once have I spoken; but I will not answer: yea, twice; but I will proceed no further."
In the flesh we are all vile. Job was saying. “I’ll keep my mouth shut and listen to you Father.” We might all take a lesson from Job.
JOB 40:6-8 Then answered the LORD unto Job out of the whirlwind, and said, 7 "Gird up thy loins now like a man: I will demand of thee, and declare thou unto me. 8 Wilt thou also disannul my judgment? wilt thou condemn me, that thou mayest be righteous?
Will you make My Plan for salvation ineffective, Job? Will you condemn My Word to make yourself righteous, Job? These were God’s questions. Don’t try to change God’s Word to make yourself look good.
JOB 40:9-10 Hast thou an arm like God? or canst thou thunder with a voice like Him? 10 Deck thyself now with majesty and excellency; and array thyself with glory and beauty.
Go ahead Job. Make yourself look good.
JOB 40:11-13 Cast abroad the rage of thy wrath: and behold every one that is proud, and abase him. 12 Look on every one that is proud, and bring him low; and tread down the wicked in their place. 13 Hide them in the dust together; and bind their faces in secret.
God is teasing Job to go ahead and do all these things, if he thinks he is able.
JOB 40:14 Then will I also confess unto thee that thine own right hand can save thee.
If you are able to do these things, God will say you are able to work out your salvation with your own right hand. I hope you are never foolish enough to think for one moment you are able to work out your own salvation.
At this point God discusses two animals, behemoth and leviathan. Behemoth did not live in this earth age with man in the flesh, leviathan does. Most scholars of today believe behemoth was the hippopotamus.

Behemoth lived in the first earth age and I believe was the Brontosaurus, a dinosaur. Remains of these creatures have been found which are 98 feet long and would have weighed tons. God likens Himself to behemoth and Satan is likened to leviathan in the scriptures that follow.
JOB 40:15 Behold now behemoth, which I made with thee; he eateth grass as an ox.
When your soul was created, God created behemoth. This is not your flesh body. These were the sons of God we covered in Genesis to begin this lecture. Listen to God’s Word now, and think for yourself.
JOB 40:16-17 Lo now, his strength is in his loins, and his force is in the navel of his belly. 17 He moveth his tail like a cedar: the sinews of his stones are wrapped together.
A cedar tree is huge and weighs tons. Have you ever seen a hippopotamus' tail? It is a twig. Some scholars say the behemoth was the elephant, or the mammoth. They say the trunk was as large as a cedar.
God said the behemoth moved his tail like a cedar. The tail is always on the posterior in the animal kingdom. I think it is safe to scratch the elephant from the list of possibilities.
Only the dinosaur had a tail that would fit this description.
JOB 40:18-19 His bones are as strong pieces of brass; his bones are like bars of iron. 19 He is the chief of the ways of God: he that made him can make his sword to approach unto him.
This is where God likened Himself to behemoth.
JOB 40:20 Surely the mountains bring him forth food, where all the beasts of the field play.
Have you ever seen a hippopotamus on a mountain? God has described a dinosaur to Job. Again, He is teasing Job because Job probably didn’t have any idea what a dinosaur was or that they existed in the first earth age. God is making a point.
He was telling Job if he knows so much, where was he during the first earth age. Behemoth did not walk this earth with man in the flesh. Behemoth walked the earth in a previous earth age.
In Job 41 leviathan is likened unto Satan. In verse 34 he is called “a king over all the children of pride.” Leviathan, or crocodiles, exist in this earth age . Man in the flesh is able to conquer a crocodile. The lesson God teaches us in 41 is that man in the flesh has power over Satan through the power of Christ.
Order Satan out of your life in the name of Jesus, and don’t ever
be foolish enough to think you are able to work out your own salvation.
There is only one Saviour.
Remember allways give Jesus Christ the Glory.
